Donald E. Shaw, 70, an Army Colonel who was vice president of the Center of Battlefield Technologies after he retired in 1979 as executive to the assistant secretary of the Army for research, development and acquisition, died of lung cancer November 26, 1998 at Inova Fairfax Hospital. He lived in McLean, Virginia. Colonel Shaw was vice president of the technical weapons systems study center at System Planning Corp. until 1996. He commanded a battery in Germany early in his career, an air defense artillery battalion in Vietnam during the war there, and an air defense artillery group in the early 1970s. He was an air defense adviser in Korea in the early 1960s and had served as a senior military assistant to the undersecretary of the Army and in the office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Colonel Shaw was born in Edgerton, Wisconsin. He was a 1953 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, received a master's degree in operations research from Tulane University, and attended the National War College. His honors included a Distinguished Service Medal, three Legions of Merit and two Bronze Stars. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, his West Point class alumni association and Beta Gamma Sigma business honorary. Survivors
include his wife of 45 years, Sarah J. Shaw of McLean; four children, Jane
Shaw Dewey of Stone Mountain, Ga., Robert D. Shaw of Jacksonville,
Fla., and Patricia S. Reed and Mary S. Richardson, both of Springfield;
and 10 grandchildren.

November 26, 1998, at INOVA Fairfax Hospital, DONALD EARL SHAW, of McLean,
VA, beloved husband of Sarah J. Shaw; dear father of Jane Shaw Dewey, Robert
D. Shaw, LTC USA (Ret.), Patricia Shaw Reed and Mary Shaw Richardson. Also
survived by five grandsons and five granddaughters. A funeral service will
be held on Thursday, December 10, 1998, at the Old Post Chapel, Fort Myer,
at 9 a.m. Interment with Full Military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
Memorial donations can be made in the name of Donald Earl Shaw, COL, US
Army (Ret.) to the ''USMA Class of 1953 Gift Fund,'' and should be mailed
