Fremont Easton Reichwein – Captain, United States Navy

Fremont Easton Reichwein, 78, a retired Navy Captain, died of complications from a hip injury and Alzheimer's disease March 8, 2004, at Southern Maryland Hospital. He was a resident of Fort Washington, Maryland.

Captain Reichwein was born in South Pasadena, California, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1946, under the Navy's V-12 program.

He served on a number of ships before training and teaching at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He served as operations officer and executive officer aboard several ships before returning to the Naval Postgraduate School to complete his master's degree in physics in 1962.

Captain Reichwein was weapons officer aboard the carrier USS Kitty Hawk. He then commanded the destroyer Fletcher out of Pearl Harbor. He also served on the staff of the commander in chief of the Pacific Fleet in Hawaii, became captain of the aircraft tender Norton Sound in Port Hueneme, California, and finally served in the office of the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon in 1970.

He received the Legion of Merit and retired from the military in 1973.

He was a member of Sigma Xi, a scientific research society. He held several local offices in the Retired Officers Association.

Captain Reichwein was a consultant with Automation Industries-Vitro Laboratories in Silver Spring and later at Systems Planning Corp. in Rosslyn and DCS Corp. in Arlington. He retired in 1993.

He enjoyed painting and calligraphy, swimming and tennis. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Piscataway, in Clinton, where he sang in the church choir.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Irmingard Reichwein of Fort Washington; two sons, Manfred Reichwein of Fort Washington and Louis Jerome Reichwein of Washington; two daughters, Monica Ellen Gaylord of Austin and Marie Kristina Webb of Rockville; a stepdaughter, Dolores Keyes of Oceanside, California; two brothers; and four granddaughters.

On Monday, March 8, 2004, the beloved husband of Irmingard Reichwein; father of Manfred and Louis Jerome Reichwein, Monica Ellen Gaylord and Marie Kristina Webb; stepfather of Dolores Keyes. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday, March 27 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Piscataway, 13401 Piscataway Rd., Clinton, Maryland. Interment Arlington National Cemetery, on Thursday, June 3, 2004, 3 p.m. with Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the charity of ones choice.
