MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA - Gilbert Wilkes III, 76, of Martinsburg, died Friday, August 1, 2003.

Born December 31, 1926, he was the son of the late Gilbert and Rose Wilkes.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Wilkes, in 2002.

He was a 1944 graduate of Georgetown Prep, a 1948 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a graduate of the University of Baltimore School of Law.

He and his wife worked together in his law practice in Martinsburg until their retirement.

He was a past president of the Berkeley County Bar Association.

He is survived by four children, Gilbert Wilkes IV of Atascadero, California, Geoffrey D. Wilkes of Gerrardstown, West Virginia, Suzanne W. Canning of Scotts Valley, California, and Christopher C. Wilkes of Martinsburg, and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Wilkes.

Services will be private.

Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
