graduate of West Point in 1937 and a veteran of both World War II and the
Korean Conflict.
He was serving with the United States Army in Germany when his command helicopter crashed and he was killed on October 10, 1961. He was born on June 19, 1913. He is buried in Section 3 of Arlington National
Cemetery along with his wife and his son.
The General's wife, Betty Spengler, passed
away in 2005 and was laid to rest with him on 26 August 2005.
BAMBERG, Germany, October 11, 1961 – A Brigadier General and a Colonel were identified today as two of the six victims of the crash of a United States Army helicopter yesterday. The Army said Brigadier General Henry M. Spengler, commander of the 32nd Air Defense Brigade, and Colonel Everett D. Light, commander of the 101st Air Defense Group, were among the dead. The other four passengers have not been identified. Brigadier General Henry Mershon Spengler was born in Pennsylvania in June 1918. He was graduated from the United Sates Military Academy in 1937, the Command and General Staff College in 1950 and the National War College in 1956. Colonel Everett Dewitt Light was born in Iowa
on December 21, 1915. He graduated from the Military Academy in 1940
and from the Command and General Staff College in 1949. NOTE: Colonet Light
was buried in the cemetery at the United States Military Academy.
