Artillery, 5 August 1861 First Lieutenant, 12 November 1861 Regimental Adjutant, 4 November 1863 to 17 November 1864 Captain, Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers, 17 November 1864 Honorably mustered out of the Volunteer Service, 3 August 1865 Regimental Quartermaster, 23 June 1866 to 5 February 1867 Captain, 5 February 1867 Major, 3rd U. S. Artillery, 30 September 1891 Lieutenant Colonel, 7th U. S. Artillery, 8 March 1898 Breveted Captain, 13 March 1865 for gallant and meritorious services during the war. Died 13 February 1899 Colonel Ramsay is buried in Arlington National
Cemetery and before he died in 1899 he arranged to top his grave with a
huge cannonball made of polished black marble.
