MAJOR POWELL CLAYTON DIES
Cavalry Officer Succumbs To Injuries Received At Sort Sam Houseon

WASHINGTON, December 27, 1916 – Major Powell Clayton, Sixteenth United States Cavalry, formerly attache to the General Staff of the Army, died today at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, from injuries received on December 16 while taking a young horse over the hurdles on the drill field.

He was born in Arkansas July 30, 1871, the son of the late ex-United States Senator Powell Clayton, and was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the Fifth Cavalry in 1891. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in October 1898, was made Captain in the Eleventh Cavalry in 1901 and obtained his Majority on June 12 this year.

Major Clayton received the degree of C.E. from the Pennsyvlania Military College in 1890 and was also a graduate of the Infantry and Cavalry School and Army War College.
