Johnston Burt of Nebraska
Appointed from Ohio, Cadet, United States Military Academy, 15 June 1891 (55) Assitional Second Lieutenant, 25th U. S. Infantry, 12 June 1896 Second Lieutenant, 10th U. S. Infantry, 4 November 1896 Transferred to the 25th Infantry, 4 February 1897 First Lieutenant, 1 January 1899 Captain, 9th U. S. Infantry, 23 July 1901 He progressed through the ranks to Brigadier General and retired as disabled in 1937. He was the author of the West Point Alumni song. He died on 19 September 1969 and was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery. Reynolds Johnston Burt was born in Omaha, Nebraska on 2 August 1874, the son of Andrew Sheridan Burt, Brigadier General, United States Army. He married Lillian Elizabeth Stewart on 22 September 1896 in Nebraska. His son, Reynolds Johnston Burt, Jr., Brigadier General, United States Army, is also buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
