Reynolds Johnston Burt, Jr, was born on 18 August 1898 in Ohio, the son of Reynolds Johnston Burt, Brigadier General,United States Army, and the grandson of Andrew Sheridan Burt, Brigadier General, United States Army. He was appointed to the United States Military Academy from Ohio and graduated in the class of 1920.

He died on 20 June 1981 in Virginia and was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery. His wide, Bertie Jefferson Burt (23 March 1905-24 November 1972) is buried with him.
