Warner Thomas Bigger, 84, a retired Marine Corps colonel and former chemistry and physics teacher at Langley High School, died after a stroke June 3, 2001, at Inova Fairfax Hospital. He lived in McLean, Virginia. Colonel Bigger, who was born in Chicago and graduated from the University of Florida, served 23 years in the Marine Corps, from 1939 to 1962. In World War II, he served with the 3rd Parachute Battalion in the Pacific and commanded a patrol on Choiseul Island that was rescued by President John F. Kennedy, then a Lieutenant in the Navy. After his military retirement in 1962, Colonel Bigger spent four years as a chemistry and physics teacher at Madison High School in Vienna. He was assistant superintendent of purchasing for Fairfax County schools and later promoted to director of the Fairfax County purchasing and supply management agency. He served two years as chairman of the Joint Purchasing Committee of the Washington Council of Governments before returning to the classroom in 1972. He joined the faculty of Langley High School, where he taught and served as chairman of the science department before retiring in 1982. He was an elder and member of the board of trustees of Lewinsville Presbyterian Church in McLean as well as a Mason and member of the American Legion. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Dorothy
Bigger of McLean; three children, Sharon Lewis of Charleston, S.C., Betty
Carman of Potomac Falls and John Bigger of McLean; a brother; nine grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 14, at 1 p.m. at the Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, 1724 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, VA.
