Douglas Craig Binney – Lieutenant Colonel, United States Marine Corps

From a contemporary press report:

Douglas Craig Binney, 69, a former Marine Lieutenant Colonel and program manager at Vitro Corp. in Arlington County, died October 23, 1999 at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital. He lived in Alexandria.

Colonel Binney was in the Marines from 1953 to 1977. During his last four years of service, he was head of the requirements and acquisitions section of the logistics management branch at Marine Headquarters in Alexandria.

He then worked at Vitro until his retirement in 1995.

Colonel Binney was born in Pensacola, Florida, and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1953. He received a master’s degree in Spanish from Middlebury College in 1961.

He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria, the Naval Academy Alumni Association and the Annapolis Naval Sailing Association.

Colonel Binney, who served in the Vietnam War, received the Bronze Star with Combat “V.”

Among his avocations were sailing and hiking.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Margaret S. Binney, of Alexandria; two sons, Blair A., of Charlottesville, and Navy Commander Bruce C., of San Diego; a daughter, Becky Binney Piran of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; his mother, Jean S. Binney of Coral Gables, Florida; a sister; and eight grandchildren.

NOTE: Colonel Bonney was the son of Arthur Fremont Binney, Major General, United States Marine Corps, who is also buried in this gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery.

On October 23, 1999, at Mt. Vernon Hospital, DOUGLAS C. BINNEY, husband of Margaret S. Binney; son of Jean S. and the late Arthur F. Binney; father of Bruce C., Blair A. and Rebecca E. Binney. Also surviving are a sister, Elizabeth Hartley, and eight grandchildren. General services will be held at Saint Lukes Episcopal Church, 8009 Fort Hunt Rd., Alexandria, Tuesday, November 23, at 10 a.m. Interment Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made  to St. Lukes Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.
