Fitzhugh Tayloe was born in 1874. During the Spanish-American War he served as First Lieutenant, Company K, 5th Maryland Volunteer Infantry. Lieutenant Tayloe died on 15 December 1928 and was buried with full military honors in Section 4 of Arlington National Cemetery. His wife, Henrietta J. Tayloe (15 May 1882-1 May 1962) outlived him by 34 years and is now buried with him.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
