Hunter S. “Hop” Hopson Jr., 61, a civil engineer who retired from the Air Force as a Colonel and from Parsons Corporation as a program manager, died February 8, 2007, at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Virginia. He had colon cancer.
Colonel Hopson, a Burke, Virginia, resident, served in the Air Force from 1969 to 1996 in civil engineering jobs. In the late 1980s, he was base civil engineer at Hahn Air Base in Germany and oversaw a multimillion-dollar renovation of major infrastructure needs.
His final active duty assignment was at the Pentagon as military assistant to the assistant secretary of the Air Force for manpower, reserve affairs, installations and environment.
He then worked for Parsons, an international engineering construction company, until 2005. He was chief construction manager at the Goddard Space Flight Center, among other jobs he held at Parsons.
His military decorations included the Legion of Merit, four Meritorious Service Medals and three Air Force Commendation Medals.
Hunter Stratton Hopson Jr. was born in Columbus, Ohio, where he was a 1969 architecture graduate of Ohio State University. He later received a master's degree in management from Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.
He was involved in mentoring programs through such organizations as Jack and Jill of America, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and engineering and Air Force professional groups. He received a lifetime achievement award from the Jack and Jill Burke/Fairfax County chapter.
The inspiration for much of his educational mentoring came from his maternal great-grandfather, Lewis Adams, a founder of what is now Tuskegee University in Alabama.
Colonel Hopson's avocations included motorboating and scuba diving. He officiated at high school and college football games during his military career.
He attended Greater Little Zion Baptist Church in Fairfax County.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Gloria Harris Hopson of Burke; two children, Deanna Hopson Green of Fort Washington and Devin Hopson of Hampton, Virginia; and two sisters.

Hopson of Hampton, Virginia; brother of Micki Hopson Stricklan (George) of Slidell, Louisiana, Carolyn Hopson White (Jan) of Dayton, Ohio and Eric Scott, Sr. of Hampton; son-in-law of Maureen Gipson Harris of Grambling, Louisiana; nephew of Audrey Jones of Columbus, Ohio. He is also survived by a step-granddaughter, Stephanie.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 17, 1 p.m. at Immanuel Bible Church, 6911 Braddock Road, Springfield, Virginia 22151. Military funeral services will take place on Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at Fort Myer Chapel at 1 p.m. Interment will Full Military Honors will follow at Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
