John Edward Clark – Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army

From a contemporary press report:

 

John Edward Clark, 83, a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Army and personnel manager at Vitro Corp., died of complications from Parkinson’s disease February 8, 2004, at Knollwood Retirement Home in Washington.

Colonel Clark was born on the Lower East Side of New York City, the 15th of 16 children. He left high school to work as a pressman, then enlisted in the Army at age 18 and served with an antitank battery that was made up of many of his childhood friends. When he was a First Sergeant, he was sent to officer candidate school at Fort Hood, Texas. After his commission, he was reassigned to his original unit.

He served in Germany during World War II and in Korea from 1951 to 1952. From 1954 to 1956, he served in Alaska. In 1958, he went back to Germany. In 1964, he commanded a missile battalion at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. He retired from the military in 1967.

Colonel Clark was the personnel manager at Vitro in Silver Spring for 15 years, retiring in 1982.

His wife of 50 years, Margaret Morrow Clark, died in 1993.

Survivors include his companion, Rosemary Miller of Silver Spring; and a daughter, Dr. M. Carolyn Clark of College Station, Texas.

On Sunday, February 8, 2004, JOHN EDWARD CLARK of Washington, DC. Beloved husband of the late Margaret (Peg) Clark; loving father of Dr. M. Carolyn Clark of Bryan, TX; cherished brother-in-law of Josephine Clarke of New York and Meta Morrow of Montreal, Canada; loving uncle of Michael, Kenneth and Jeffrey Clarke of New York and Bryce Morrow, Diane Campbell and Eileen St. Louis of Montreal, Canada; faithful friend to Rosemary Miller and Ben Benoit.

Interment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, March 15 at 3 p.m. Family and friends should assemble at the Administration Building at 2:30 p.m. If desired, memorial contributions may be made in John’s memory to Hospice Care of DC, 4401 Connecticut Ave., NW, Suite 700, Washington, DC 20008 or to the Army Distaff Foundation at Knollwood, 6200 Oregon Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20015.
