Colonel John F. McNulty Jr., a retired career Army officer who was later a university dean of students, died of cancer June 21 at his Ocean City, Maryland, home. He was 87.
Colonel McNulty was born in Fells Point and raised in Linthicum. He was a graduate of Glen Burnie High School and enlisted in the Maryland National Guard in 1936.
He was a graduate of the Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and after receiving his commission as a Second Lieutenant in 1943, was sent to an infantry unit in Europe. He fought in France, Belgium and Germany during World War II.
Colonel McNulty later served with the Army's First Division in the late 1940s, and was a 1954 graduate of the Army's Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1956, he was assigned as a military adviser to the French Army serving in Indo-China.
Later in his career, he was director of the Army Infantry School's Small Arms Firing School at Fort Benning and served as deputy commander of the 24th Infantry Division's 21st Infantry Battle Group in Munich from 1960 to 1963.
He retired as a colonel from Fort Meade in 1964. His decorations included the Bronze Star and three Army Commendation Medals for Meritorious Service, and the Combat Infantry Badge.
Colonel McNulty was a member of the First Infantry, 24th Infantry and 16th Infantry division associations. He was also a member of the American Legion.
In 1964, he became dean of students at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. He retired in 1992.
An accomplished marathon runner, he was founder and coach of the Johnson and Wales Athletic Club, which produced several champion marathoners, including John Treacy, a two-time world cross country champion and a silver medallist at the 1982 Olympics at Los Angeles.
Colonel McNulty, who lived in Narragansett, Rhode Isalnd, also maintained a home in Ocean City, to which he moved permanently several years ago.
He was a communicant of St. Luke Roman Catholic Church, where a funeral Mass was offered Saturday. Funeral services with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. August 26 at Arlington National Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Mary Jane Peters; three sons, Michael F. McNulty of Severna Park, John F. McNulty III of Pearland, Texas, and Patrick J. McNulty of Wakefield, R.I.; three daughters, Mary Jane Getz of Winchester, Virginia, Mary Cathleen Bowman of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Mary Eileen Cabral of Warwick, Rhoide Island; a brother, John F. McNulty of Towson.; three sisters, Doris Allen of Woodlawn, Rose Lemoy of Mechanicsville and Jan Rhinehart of Silver Spring; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
