Service to be held for Marine colonel, wife

TWENTYNINE PALMS, CALIFORNIA —- A memorial service will be held Wednesday at the Marine Corps’ desert training base for a Marine Colonel who was killed, along with his wife, in a head-on collision over the weekend.

Colonel John M. Taylor, 50, and his wife Judy, 51, died after their 1998 Volkswagen Beetle was hit by a Ford Ranger pickup driven by a Marine stationed at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center outside Twentynine Palms.

Taylor worked as the director of the Tactical Training Exercise Control Group, which crafts war-game scenarios and evaluates units during desert warfare training at the combat center.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the Taylors were riding westbound on Highway 62 in Yucca Valley when the pickup, driven by 23-year-old Sergeant Max Walker, drifted onto the eastbound lane and struck their car. Walker, who is assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment at the combat center, was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs and admitted in serious condition.


John Michael Taylor, Colonel, United States Marine Corps, died on Saturday, November 23, 2002. he was the beloved son of John and Ann Taylor of Rockville, Maryland; brother of Patrick Taylor and his wife, Margy of Rockville, Maryland and Sue Ketchum and her husband, Skip of Damascus, Maryland; loving father of Lance Corporal Jordan Zachary Taylor and his wife, Krissie of Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, and Andrea Lane Taylor of San Clemente, California; uncle of Joel and Katie Ketchum; grandfather of Riley and Jaylin Taylor; grandson of Pat Truville of Madison, Indiana. He is also survived by numerous relatives and friends.

Services will be held in his memory on Friday, December 20 at 12:45 at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to The Marine Corps Toys for Tots Campaign.
