With great regret, the Chief, Army Reserve, announces the death of Colonel Linda Diane Green. Colonel Green passed away August 27, 2000, in Arlington, Virginia. She had served the Nation in the United States Army for over 23 years in both Active and Reserve assignments.

Colonel Green was born in Gatesville, Texas, and lived her early childhood on what is now part of Fort Hood, Texas, before moving to Lampasas, Texas. During her military career, she served in various units around the world including the 2d Armored Division, the 25th Infantry Division, the 80th Division, the United States Army Reserve Command, and the Army Staff. She held positions that included Chief, Strategic Analysis and Liaison, Office of the Chief, Army Reserve; Executive Officer to the Chief, Army Reserve; Rand Fellow; and Chief, Strategic Communications, Office of the Chief of Staff, Army.

Colonel Green’s last assignment was to the Staff and Faculty of the National Defense  University.

The most recent highlights of her career included formulation of the Army Reserve’s transformation strategy and redesign during the Army Reserve force downsizing after the Cold War and Desert Shield/Desert Storm and participation in the current Army Transformation as a member of the Chief of Staff, Army’s personal staff.

Colonel Green’s military decorations and awards included the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Air Assault Badge and the Army Staff Identification Badge.

Colonel Green’s civilian and military education included attendance at Texas Women’s University; receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University; graduating from the Army Command and General Staff College; being a Rand Fellow, Washington, DC; and earning a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy from the National Defense University, Washington, DC.

Colonel Green is survived by her daughter, Aimee D. Green, of Austin, Texas; mother and stepfather, Mildred and James McKean of Irving, Texas; father, Richard Dillinger of Porum, Okla.; and brother, Richard Dillinger of Irving, Texas.

Colonel Green will be buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.

Linda Diane Green, 50, a Colonel who was Army Reserve liaison to the National Defense University, died August 27, 2000 at Fairfax Hospital of internals injuries suffered when she fell off her bike along George Washington Parkway, south of Alexandria.

Colonel Green, who lived in Arlington, began her 23-year military career as a quartermaster officer. She had lived in the Washington area off and on since 1988.

She was born in Gatesville, Texas. She attended Texas Women’s University and graduated from Florida State University and the Army Command and General Staff College.

She received a master’s degree in national security strategy from the National Defense University.

She served as a supply officer in Hawaii, as executive officer to the chief of the Army Reserve, as a Rand Corp. fellow, working on institutional training for the Army and as chief of strategic communications in the Army chief of staff’s office. She helped plan the Reserve’s downsizing in the 1990s.

Her honors included a Legion of Merit, four Meritorious Service Medals and an Army Commendation Medal.

Her marriage to Joseph Green ended in divorce.

Survivors include a daughter, Aimee D. Green, of Austin; her mother and stepfather, Mildred and James McKean of Irving, Texas; her father, Richard Dillinger of Porum, Oklahoma; and a brother.
