Captain Lissa Mehallick Kohler, Nurse Corps, United States Navy, retired, 50, passed away on Christmas morning at her home in East Goshen, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

She was married to Captain David R. Kohler, United States Navy, retired, a Navy SEAL.

The daughter of William Mehallick of Scottdale, Pennsylvania, and the late Marion Bluhm Mehallick, she was born in Pittsburgh and graduated from Southmoreland High School in 1970. Upon graduation from Carlow College in Pittsburgh in 1974 with a BS in Nursing, she was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy. She served for 26 years as a pediatric nurse practitioner as a clinician, educator, administrator and leader. Her duty stations included: New London, Connecticut; Sigonella, Italy; Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; Corpus Christi, Texas; Norfolk/Portsmouth, Virginia; and San Diego, California She earned graduate degrees in nursing at the University of California, San Diego (1978) and Old Dominion University, Norfolk (1995).

Captain Kohler also served several years as specialty advisor to the Surgeon General and to the Director of the Navy Nurse Corps. Her final tour of duty prior to retiring in 1998 was associate director for nursing services (OB/GYN/PEDS) at Naval Medical Center, San Diego, where she led a professional medical staff of more than 300 personnel.

Following retirement from the Navy, she dedicated herself to restoring and remodeling her 180-year-old stone bank barn-home while pursuing her creative and artistic interests in interior design, horticulture and flower arranging – with her husband and dachshund. She was a member of the following professional nursing organizations: NAPNAP (military chapter); AAACN; Uniformed Nurse Practitioner Association; the American Public Health Association; and Sigma Theta Tau National Nursing Honor Society.

Captain Kohler is survived by her father, William Mehallick of Scottdale, Pennsylvania; her husband, Captain David R. Kohler, U.S. Navy retired, of West Chester, Pennsylvania; her brother, Timothy W. Mehallick of Scottdale; mother-in-law, Rita C. Kohler of Pottstown, Pennsylvania; her aunt, Louise B. Wise of Scottdale; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. at Christ Memorial Lutheran Church, Paoli Pike and Line Road, Malvern, Pennsylvania. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors in the Spring of 2004.
