Paul B. Welch, Jr. – Colonel, United States Army

From a contemporary press report:

Colonel Paul B.Welch, Jr.,  73, died May 27, 1997 at his home in Brevard, North Carolina.

Colonel Welch enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was commissioned as an infantry officer from the Officer Candidate School in 1944. He separated from the Army in 1951 and was recalled to duty in 1953 where he served as a field artilleryman. He commanded infantry, cavalry and armored units during World War II and the Korean War.

Colonel Welch attended the Command and Staff College and the U.S. Air Force War College. He retired from the Army in 1974.

His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Silver Star and Legion of Merit.

He is survived by his wife, Stephanie; two sons, Paul III and Sheridan; one daughter, Susan; and two grandchildren.

Burial services were held on October 17, 1997 at the Arlington National Cemetery.
