GIVES PLACE TO HERO’S WIDOW

WASHINGTON, June 22, 1923 – One of the last acts of President Harding before he started on his Western trip was to sign an executive order placing permananently in the Government service Mrs. Amelia V. Briscoe, widow of Captain William J. Briscoe, who lost his life in saving two natives in the Philipines.

Captain Briscoe in fighting a forest fire near Camp John Hay, saw teo Igornote soldiers, blinded and bewildered, surrounded by the flames.  He rescued them, but died from his injuries.
